Based on IMTS 2010, the term “international merchandise trade statistics” (IMTS) refers to a specialized multipurpose domain of official statistics concerned with the provision of data on the movements of goods between countries and areas. The term “international merchandise trade statistics” refers to both foreign (or external) merchandise trade statistics as compiled by countries and international merchandise trade statistics as represented by the consolidated and standardized country data sets that are compiled and maintained by the international or regional agencies. For the purposes of the present publication, the term “trade statistics” will be used to refer to international, foreign or external merchandise trade statistics, unless otherwise indicated, and the term “merchandise” has the same meaning as the terms “goods” and “commodities”.
